The world woke up last Sunday to the shocking news that a Malaysian airplane Flight MH 370, with some 239 passengers and crew members aboard, and headed for Beijing, China, had vanished into thin air barely one hour after take-off the previous day
Today, nearly a week after that mysterious flight into oblivion, not a single trace of the ill-fated aircraft has been established – either by Kuala Lumpur, Beijing or the still-dazed international security and civil aviation communities.
As dozens of ships, aircraft, submarines and tens of countries launch a global search for the missing plane, each team has drawn blank, with grief-stricken families and relatives converging on Beijing and Kuala Lumpur from different parts of the world in anxious search for information on their loved ones who were on the plane. Although Flight MH 370 was said to be carrying nationals of no fewer than 14 countries, China, with about 154, has the highest number of its citizens on the ill-fated Boeing 777 aircraft. But millions, the world over, are joined in this grief, knowing that it is easier to deal with the pain of the death of loved ones, than to face the trauma of the uncertainty of their fate, as we have it with these 239 missing passengers.
Since the disappearance of the plane, all manner of theories and hypotheses have been advanced as to what might have happened, even as the search for clues is intensified.
While one theory believes that something “sudden” and “violent” might have happened to the plane to explain why the cabin crew could not send out an alarm, another story has it that the aircraft was last seen heading in the exact opposite of its destination, which suggests that the pilot might have been manually trying to sight an airport to land the plane, having experienced a total collapse of its electronic signal systems.
Only two days ago, another report emerged, but which was soon denied, that the aircraft actually flew for nearly four hours, off its due course. This claim came on the heels of photos of a totally different wreckage erroneously released by Chinese authorities, and another claim on the social network that an oil rig worker actually saw the plane going down.
Amidst all these, there is also the theory of a possible hijack, since about two passengers on the plane who were confirmed to have bought their tickets at the same place and time were travelling with stolen passports. But, this terrorist-hijack theory has since been largely dismissed since no terrorist organisation has claimed responsibility for whatever may have happened to the plane. Moreover, the issue of stolen identities and people travelling on stolen passports, which is said to be particularly rife in the China/South-east Asia axis, is a global phenomenon that has put Interpol and the international aviation community at their wits end.
As we share in the trauma of the directly affected families, we call on all the relevant authorities, as well as the larger global community, to intensify efforts to solve the mystery of this missing plane. This would, at least, help to provide answers to the many questions that have been agitating the minds of friends and families of the crew and passengers of Flight MH 370. Furthermore, a quick resolution of this mystery flight will go a long way in reassuring the flying public that air travel is still a safe mode of transportation.
Given that an aircraft, just like any other machine, is bound to occasionally develop problems, what matters most is the response of the concerned authorities in dealing with the issues as they arise, keeping in mind that, in all these, human lives and emotions are involved. And, these should transcend all other business and technical considerations.
That is why we must also commend the Malaysian and Chinese authorities on the way they have supported families and friends of those aboard the plane, facilitating their travels within and outside their countries and provinces in their quest for information on their loved ones. However, there is still room for improvement, giving that China is accusing Malaysia of not stepping up action and properly coordinating the search efforts. There is also need to expand the search beyond the current 27,000 square nautical miles (about 93,000 square kilometres), the area around where the aircraft was said to have made the last radar contact before it vanished.
Most of all, the fate of Flight MH 370 has raised several issues that continue to dog modern air travel. These include the issue of stolen passports; terrorism and airport security; the need to expand the current scope of monitoring of airborne aircraft; expansion of collaboration between and among countries, among others. This is even more so in relation to search and rescue efforts. Flight 370 is not the first time a plane would suddenly vanish in flight. A few years ago, the world was in a similar situation with a French airliner in South America. In other instances, we have had planes crashing and almost vanishing in snow-covered remote Russia, but none, in recent years, has thrown up a puzzle that has taken this long to solve. This unfortunate incident, therefore, opens a new window to appreciably address and strengthen flight monitoring, search and rescue efforts, and aviation intelligence.
