Hundreds of air travelers went through harrowing experience yesterday, as an Uyo-bound airplane belonging to Arik Airline, suddenly developed faults while taxing for take off at the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos, thus forcing the pilot to abort the flight and return the aircraft to base for maintenance.
The incident, however had its ripple effect in Uyo as it resulted in a protest by passengers who were scheduled to be brought back to Lagos from Uyo at about 12.45pm on the same aircraft following the repeated shifting of the arrival time of the aircraft from 12.05pm to 3.45pm and later 8.45pm.
It was the second time this week, that the airline would be forced to terminate a scheduled flight that was taxing for takeoff for the same problem, a trend that signals that all was not well with the airline’s fleet of aircraft and calls to question, the competence of the officials in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), who okayed such aircraft as airworthy and fit to fly.
• Arik Aircraft
On Monday, a pilot manning a bombardier aircraft belonging to the company, which was bound for Uyo from Lagos at about 10.45am, spotted a fault as the aircraft amber light suddenly turned red while taxing, signaling danger. To avert a crash, the pilot had to abort the flight. It took about seven hours to fix the problem and get the flight back on track, to take the Uyo-bound passengers to their destination.
However, yesterday’s aborted flight in Lagos and the subsequent fixing of the aircraft created tension and anxiety among passengers, who initially refused to board the aircraft after it was repaired and certified fit to fly.
Arik Air’s head of flight operations and deputy managing director, Capt Ado Sanusi, who spoke to journalists, confirmed that the aircraft that would have flown to Uyo from Lagos to airlift passengers back to Lagos, developed a snag while taxing to take off from the Lagos General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
Sanusi said that engineers had worked on the aircraft but that the intending passengers protested and said they would not board the plane again.
“If we call for boarding and the passengers refuse to board, we cancel the Lagos to Uyo flight. Then the Abuja to Uyo flight that is scheduled to stay over in Uyo will now bring the passengers back to Lagos, “ Sanusi said.
As at press time, another source at Arik Air said that the passengers had agreed to board the aircraft back to Uyo. “The aircraft has left to Uyo with the passengers and it will bring back to Lagos, the passengers at Uyo airport,” he said.
