Construction giant, Julius Berger, has said that nothing will affect its earlier resolve to complete the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge on schedule.
According to the company, work has been going on since the flag off of the project by President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that it is not the job of the contractor to procure Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), report on the project. He denied any instruction from the Ministry of Environment for the company to stop work.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment has in a full page advertorial refuted the allegation that the Minister had given Mrs. Laurentia Mallam, approval for stoppage of work on the project stating that at a recent press conference conducted, the Minister had stated that the Nigerian government placed a high premium on environment issues and that was why government itself has to follow due process by obtaining an interim Certificate of Environment Impact Assessment on the 2nd Niger Bridge.
The Ministry continued: “The Minister of Environment will continue to monitor the progress of work on the project to ensure that the EIA it issued is fully complied with. Similarly, we shall ensure that all relevant and subsequent EIA processes are undertaken for a successful completion of the project.
“All Nigerians and particular, the good people of the South-east and the South-south who hold this project very dear to their hearts should rest assured that the Ministry of Environment will leave no stone unturned in doing its bit to facilitate the execution of this all important project,” it noted.
The EIA is a formal process used to predict the environmental consequences (positive or negative) of a plan, policy, programme, or project prior to implementation. It proposes measures to adjust impacts to acceptable levels or to investigate new technological solution. The EIA law protects environment with sound basis for effective and sustainable development.
In February this year, the Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, had disclosed in Abuja that N117 billion would be spent to construct the second Niger Bridge. This followed President Jonathan’s flag off on March 10, the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge linking Asaba in Delta State with Onitsha in Anambra State.
