10 facts about Nelson Manðela

Most people knew Nelson Mandela as the first black president of South Africa, a man who became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement, and one who gave up nearly 30 years of his life in prison. He remains a hero to South Africans as well as to the international community, and will continually represent the struggle for freedom. But it's easy to forget that even legends are human. Here are 10 things you probably didn’t know about Nelson Mandela.

1. Mandela’s tribal nickname is "Rolihlahla", meaning "Troublemaker."
Other accounts translate Rolihlalhla to mean "to pull a branch from a tree," which, of course, is something only a troublemaker would do. It was his teacher, Miss Mdingane, who gave him the English name "Nelson," much to the relief of journalists everywhere when he became famous.

3. The United Nations decreed his birthday as Mandela Day.
In 2009, the U.N. declared Mandela’s birthday, July 18, as Mandela Day to mark his contribution to world freedom. The holiday calls on individuals to donate 67 minutes to doing something for others, reflecting the 67 years that Mandela had been a part of the anti-apartheid movement.

4. Mandela is often referred to as Madiba, his Xhosa clan name.
Mandela was a member of the Thembu, a Xhosa clan, and was often referred to by his clan name, Madiba. It is a sign of the incredible diversity of people and languages in South Africa. The country has 11 different official languages.

5. Mandela’s father had four wives, and Nelson is one of 13 children.
Mandela’s father, a local chief and councellor to the Thembu king, died from tuberculosis when his son was 9. Before that, he fathered 13 children by four wives, four boys and nine girls. After his father’s death, Mandela was put under the guardianship of Jongintaba, the Thembu regent.

6. Mandela has received more than 250 awards for his accomplishments.
Among these awards is the shared 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with F.W. de Klerk, the last president of the apartheid government of South Africa (he too is widely credited as an instrumental force in ending apartheid). Additionally, Mandela had received more than 50 honorary degrees from international universities worldwide, became the first honorary Canadian citizen in 2001, and received the last Lenin Peace Prize from the Soviet Union.

7. Stevie Wonder dedicated his 1985 Oscar for "I Just Called to Say I Love You" to Mandela.
After Stevie accepted his award in honour of Nelson Mandela, the government-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation banned Stevie’s music from the airways. It wasn't until Mandela was elected in 1994 that Stevie was finally allowed back in South Africa.

46664, Mandela’s prison cell number at Robben Island, has become an international campaign to fight AIDS.

8. Mandela outlived his two oldest sons.
Mandela had six children, but tragically lost his two oldest sons. Thembi died in a car crash at age 25. Mandela was in prison at the time of the death and was unable to attend the funeral. Another son died of AIDS in 2005 at age 54. While Mandela’s administration was criticized for not doing enough to fight the AIDS epidemic in South Africa, he established the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 1999 following his retirement to help fight the spread of AIDS.

After running away from home, Mandela became involved in the African National Congress

9. Mandela ran away from home at age of 19.
When his guardian tried to arrange a marriage, Mandela ran away from home in 1941 and headed to Johannesburg. He began to work as a night watchman at Crown Mines, but was fired after it was discovered that he was the Thembu regent’s runaway.

10. Mandela spent his first night after being freed from prison in Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s home.
Tutu had his helpers prepare his own favorite meal of chicken curry, rice and green salad, followed by rum raising ice cream and custard!

ßest Tecno phones of year 2013

The Asia mobile phone company, Tecno Mobile is currently leading in West African mobile phone market. In a bid to keep its strong grip on the low-end smartphone market in Nigeria, Tecno keeps churning out new phones at close intervals, days at times.
In year 2013 alone, the company had released over 20 different brand of Android smartphones into the market including their popular Phantom pad, the company's first tablet.
Here, I've ranked Tecno smartphones in order of overall features and performance. The Tecno F9 tops my list. Read on to see other phones that make the Top 15 ranking.
Note that some features are common to all the phones that make this list. These include 2G and 3G connectivity, dual SIM compatibility, microSD slots for memory expansion, as well as light, proximity, and gravity sensors. The specifications included for the phones are those that set them apart from each other.

1. Tecno F9 (Phantom A3)
- 3.75G Connectivity
- 6" screen display
- Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
- 1.5GHz quad-core processor
- MT6589 MediaTek Chipset
- RAM 1GB
- 16GB internal
- 13MP rear camera
- 8MP front camera
- 2630mAh battery

This phone was the best and the last phone that was released in year 2013. It currently tops my list due to its exquisite features that were systemly coded into this device! 1.5GHz quad-core processor is really a good go for this device, coupled with a 3.75G connectivity, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, 6" screen display, nice camera, powerful 2630mAh battery really carved a niche for this device!
• The current price of Tecno F9 (Phantom A3) in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #50,000

2. Tecno F8 (Phantom A2)
- 3.75G connectivity
- 5.7-inch display
- Android 4.2 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.2GHz quad core processor
- GPU embedded
- 1GB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 13MP rear camera
- 8MP front camera
- 2630mAH Li-Ion battery.

Tecno F8 (Phantom A2) was released in October 2013, it is the second biggest and the second best of them all. One would be correct to call it the second best smartphone made by Tecno in year 2013.
• The current price of Tecno F8 (Phantom A2) in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #45,000

3. Tecno F7 (Phantom A+)
- 3.75G connectivity
- 5-inch display
- Android 4.2 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.3GHz quad core processor
- GPU embedded
- 1GB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 8MP rear camera
- 1.2MP front camera
- 2100mAH Li-Ion battery.

This device is still selling fast. It is the third biggest of them all. It's complete in all aspects, but lags behind the F8 & F9 in terms of display size, camera, and battery capacity.
• The current price of Tecno F7 (Phantom A+) in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #36,000

Note: Tecno N9 & Tecno F7 have almost the same specification! So, it is good to say that the duo are of a substitute to one another!

• Tecno M7

4. Tecno M7
- 3.75G connectivity
- 5-inch display
- Android 4.2 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.2GHz dual core processor
- GPU embedded
- 1GB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 8MP rear camera
- 1.2MP front camera
- 2000mAH Li-Ion battery.

Though very new, this device still couldn't find a place in the first 3 spots because it is powered by a dual-core processor, which isn't as strong as the quad-core processor that is packed by the almighty Phantoms.
• The current price of Tecno M7 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #27,500

5. Tecno N7
- No 3.75G (only 2G and 3G)
- 5-inch display
- Android 4.0 OS (ICS)
- 1.0GHz dual core processor
- GPU embedded
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 5MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 2300mAH Li-Ion battery.

Though this device was at the top of the list earlier in the year 2013, the more recent devices have pushed it down to number 5. But that still doesn't take away the fact that it's a very good and durable device.
• The current price of Tecno N7 as of January 2014 is #29,000

6. Tecno D7
- 3.75G connectivity
- 5.5" screen display
- Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
- 1.3GHz dual-core processor
- GPU (embedded)
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 5MP rear camera
- 2MP front camera
- 1800 Li-on battery.

This device has a nice camera, powerful processor (although, it's not quad core), power battery, 5.5" screen display, embedded GPU, 3.75G connectivity and lots more! A hand on it is a nice idea too!
• The current price of Tecno D7 as of January 2014 is #26,000

7. Tecno M5
- 1.3GHz dual-core processor
- 1800 mAh battery
- 4.5'' Capacitive Touchscreen
- 1.3MP Front-facing
- 8.0MP AF Rear-facing
- 4GB ROM
- 1GB RAM
- Expandable SDcard (up to 32GB)

This device has a very nice
• The current price of Tecno M5 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #25,000

8. Tecno M3
- 3.75G connectivity
- 3.5-inch display
- Android 4.2 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.0GHz dual core processor
- GPU embedded
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 5MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 1400mAH Li-Ion battery.

This is presently the best of the medium sized Android devices by Tecno. Though, its battery isn't as strong as the L3, it is better than the L3 in terms of camera, and having 3.75G connectivity. As a user of this device, I recommend this device!
• The current price of Tecno M3 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #15,000

9. Tecno P5
- No 3.75G connectivity
- 4" screen display
- Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean)
- 1.0 GHz dual-core processor
- MT6572W processor
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 5MP rear camera
- 2MP front camera
- 1800mAh Li-Ion battery.

This device is a very good device, but it lacks 3.75G connectivity! It is a good buy for those who need a large screen display!
• The current price of Tecno P5 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #17,000 - #19,000

10. Tecno S3
- 3.75G connectivity
- 3.5-inch display
- Android 4.2 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.0GHz dual core processor
- No GPU
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 5MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 1400mAH Li-Ion battery.

Also a new device, this smartphone isn't as impressive as one would expect. In fact, one would wonder why Tecno came up with the device in the first place. It's good, however, for those who want to use something different from P3, L3 and M3.
• The current price of Tecno S3 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #14,000

11. Tecno L3
- No 3.75G (only 2G and 3G)
- 3.5-inch display
- Android 4.1 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.0GHz dual core processor
- GPU embedded
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 3MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 2400mAH Li-Ion battery.

This device rocks mainly because of its very strong battery. The device is good, but it lacks 3.75G connectivity!
• The current price of Tecno L3 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #13,800

12. Tecno Q1
- No 3.75G (only 2G and 3G)
- 2.6-inch display
- Android 4.0 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.0GHz dual core processor
- GPU embedded
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 5MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 1450mAH Li-Ion battery.

This device has similar features with the D1, but lacks 3.75G connectivity and has small screen display!
• The current price of Tecno Q1 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #17,000

14. Tecno D1
- 3.75G connectivity
- 2.6-inch display
- Android 4.2 OS (Jelly Bean)
- 1.0GHz dual core processor
- GPU embedded
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal memory
- 2MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 1450mAH Li-Ion battery.

This device is occupying the 14th position due to its small display. It's a great device for those who find it hard to cope with touchscreen keypads, as it features a solid QWERTY keypad. It is rated below Tecno Q1 due to its low camera quality and low popularity!
• The current price of Tecno D1 in Nigeria as of January 2014 is #16,500

15. Tecno D5
- No 3.75G connectivity
- 4" screen display
- Android 4.0.4 (Ice-cream Sandwich)
- 1GHz dual-core processor
- 512MB RAM
- 4GB internal
- 3MP rear camera
- 0.3MP front camera
- 2300mAh battery.

Tecno D5 rocks mainly because of its large screen display and a strong battery! Practically, it has poor network connectivity over a WIFI network!
• The current price of Tecno D5 as of January 2014 is #15,000

About Webometrics:
Since 2004, the Ranking Web (or Webometrics Ranking) is published twice a year (data is collected during the first weeks of January and July for being public at the end of both months), covering more than 20,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. We intend to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities. If the web performance of an institution is below the expected position according to their academic excellence, university authorities should reconsider their web, open access and transparency policy, promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications.

APC Cannot Stop PDP in 2015 — Uduehi, ex-presidential adviser

Esther Uduehi, a former presidential adviser on National Assembly and a leader of Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State, was recently appointed the Chairman, Governing Board of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult Education and Non- Formal Education. In this interview, Uduehi speaks on national issues, the problems in the PDP, 2015 presidency, the commission, among other issues.

Excerpts: There is a stiff challenge from some stakeholders to the alleged plan by President Goodluck Jonathan to seek re-election in 2015. Do you think he has done much to warrant his coming back?

• Esther Uduehi

To me, the issue of coming back or not coming is premature, because the president has not said he wants to come back. But if he says he wants to come back, he is qualified. Nigerians will decide if he has done enough for them to bring him back. He has been there and naturally started on a shaky note but has gradually come to strengthen himself in office. He has done some things that ordinarily people will score him and say he has done this and that.
In the power sector, he is handling it squarely, the unbundling of the PHCN, you can name so many of them, but there are certain other things you may perhaps say the president ought to have done which he has not. I am from the South-south, I am anxious to see him complete the East-West Road. But I can at least say he has started it. At a time, the problem on that particular road was that the contractor couldn’t work because of militancy.
I don’t really know what their problems are today. I want to wake up one day and say that road is done and I can now travel from Benin to Port Harcourt or from Calabar with ease. He has done quite some things and he has some things to do. But if he says he wants to come back, he will have a lot of things to say he has done and it will be left to Nigerians to look at it.
You are a member of the PDP. How do you rate the performance of your party in Delta State over the years and particularly the challenge posed by the All Progressives Congress (APC)?
Delta is a PDP state and a lot has been done by the party in the state. I don’t know who to commend for this, but the decision of the governors forum peer group that all states should make sure that they face education and repair all schools, I think that is quite commendable, because you see so much being done not only in Delta State, but everywhere. Even when we started the first eight years under Ibori, a lot was done, just that perhaps we expected that given the funds available, much more could have been done.
I think in Delta right now, they are trying now to do as much as they can and we are hoping that before 2015, much more will be done. Of recent, there is a programme on TV that gives the highlights of what and what they are doing, just like what you have in Akwa Ibom State. They are facing education squarely, they are giving scholarship. On health, the hospitals are being equipped, health is free for some categories of people and I think it is because of this that the governor was given a fellowship recently and for which the state was celebrated.
So the PDP has done well in Delta and that is why you find that the other parties have not been able to push no matter how much they have struggled. We believe that in 2015, PDP has no competitor; even nationally, PDP has no competitor.
With the unfolding scenario, do you think the PDP can clinch on to power for many years as was speculated before now?
Even with the unfolding scenario, PDP has nothing to fear. It is not going to be easy with the so-called merger the defected PDP governors are going into with the APC. Don’t forget the people they are going to meet in the APC are no fools. You are saying that in a state where those governors are, those people who have been in APC all these years and have been waiting for an opportunity to run for one position or the other; the same governors will now go to APC and override them and take over?
It doesn’t work that way. What of the leaders of the APC in those states? So that will bring about some confusion. It is not going to be as sweet as it is sounding at the beginning; everybody wants to get power one way or the other. So somehow I believe that it is not going to be that easy for them. PDP doesn’t have anything to fear. But the PDP needs to put its house in order, to try and pacify members who are aggrieved; it is very important.
