Federal Polytechnic, Oko (OKOPOLY) expels 50 students for examination malpractices

Students of Federal Polytechnic, Oko (OKOPOLY), Anambra State, are now living in fear, following the recent expulsion of over 50 students caught in examination malpractice and other sundry activities.
Campus Sun gathered that the last semester examination brought fever on students because those caught in examination malpractice were expelled, while those who did not meet the minimum academic benchmark required in the various departments were told to withdraw and enter another department.
More than 40 students were told to quit or repeat in the Mass Communication Department after the last result was released, causing panic among the students.
The Rector, Prof. Godwin Onu, had earlier warned students to desist from exam malpractice or face outright explusion. The Public Relations Officer, Obini Onuchukwu, said no fewer than 50 students have lost their admission in the institution due to their involvement in examination malpractice and other nefarious activities. He said the institution took academic honesty seriously in order to restore sanity and discipline in the institution.
Onuchukwu said the institution also introduced computer based examination system, starting with the Department of Public Administration to reduce examination malpractice to zero level.

Oko Students

“The nature of the exam is that the student will work with the computer, which sets the time of the exam. On the expiration of the allotted time, the computer goes off. The result will be electronically processed and sent to the students' phone and those of their parents or guardians within one hour. Once the result uploads, it goes into the students file and gives a cumulative of the students score. By this, we have reduced contact between the students and the lecturers,” he said.

Aside the high security of examination materials, Onuchukwu said the procedure also saves money that could have been used in printing answer scripts and question papers. "It also makes our students to become computer literate. The future plan is that results and certificates of students would be posted online after graduation. Nigerian Security Printing and Minting now handles the printing of our certificates, with security codes, thereby reducing forgery", he said.
Speaking on the incident, the Head of Department (H.O.D) Mass Communication, Mr. G.O. Ibe, advised students to remain focused on their studies. He noted that students don't devote much time to their studies but engage in social networking on Facebook, 2go and Whatsapp.
Reacting to the development, an HND 1 Mass Communication student, Nelson Nwamara, said final year students also risked expulsion or even withdrawal.
Hear him, "The school should have given them chance or even hear from them. Some of them may have a good version why they couldn't meet up with the minimum result required. Some may have financial problems or even fall sick. For me, it does not go down well with me. I will prefer that the school should give the person suspension for one to two years or repeating the class than expelling that person completely because some of the students may not get the necessary teaching."

As reported by Master Onwudinjo, a Mass Communication student, Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

Rooney tries in vain as United, Chelsea draw!

Wayne Rooney returned to Manchester United’s starting line-up on Monday but failed to inconvenience his suitors Chelsea in a forgettable 0-0 Premier League draw at Old Trafford.
Rooney has been the subject of two failed bids from Chelsea in recent weeks, but he was one of the few impressive players on a night when the season’s first major head-to-head clash failed to live up to its billing.
The England striker tested visiting goalkeeper Petr Cech on three occasions, while David Moyes, in his first home game as United manager, saw his side refused a second-half penalty following an apparent handball by Frank Lampard.
Jose Mourinho provided a provocative touchline presence and was goaded throughout on his return to Old Trafford as Chelsea coach, but his team rarely threatened ahead of Friday’s UEFA Super Cup against Bayern Munich.

Barclays

The point was enough to send Chelsea top of the nascent standings, but they have played a game more than the rest and United can draw level with them if they win at Liverpool on Sunday.
Rooney’s inclusion in United’s starting XI, for the first time since April, caused the evening’s first ripple of excitement, but Mourinho’s team selection was every bit as eye-catching.
The Portuguese named a team without a recognised striker, deploying Andre Schuerrle up front ahead of Oscar, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne, and leaving Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku on the bench.
Moyes acknowledged in his programme notes that he must prove he is "the right successor" to Alex Ferguson, but the home fans showed their approval of his appointment with a banner reading "THE CHOSEN ONE" that was displayed in the Stretford End.
He could not have picked a more high-profile opponent forhis first turn in the Old Trafford dug-out, or a more glorious evening, but the fare on the newly laid pitch was disappointing.
Twice, Oscar shot straight at United goalkeeper David de Gea, while United’s best chance of the first half saw Robin van Persie deceive half the stadium into thinking a goal had been scored with a snapshot that ruffled the side-netting.
Rooney, for his part, looked determined to influence the game, despite Chelsea’s fans mischievously taking up their United counterparts’ chants of "Rooney!" and pledging: "We’ll see you next week!"
Playing in support of Van Persie, he constantly dropped deep to demand the ball, but when he managed to find space on the edge of the box with a smart turn, his shot lacked the power to trouble Cech.
Chelsea were content for their hosts to attack them, but the tactic almost back-fired in the 56th minute when Rooney found Danny Welbeck inside the box, only for the England forward to poke the ball wide.
In response, Gary Cahill tested De Gea’s handling with a meaty drive from distance, but Mourinho decided his team needed a greater cutting edge and sent on Torres for De Bruyne.
For all the enmity between the sides, the game lacked bite, but United appeared to have cause to feel aggrieved when referee Martin Atkinson failed to award a penalty after Tom Cleverley's shot struck Lampard on the hand.
Rooney raised the biggest cheer of the night with a full-bodied sliding tackle to dispossess Ramires, before giving Cech his last and most searching examination of the night with a powerful drive from 30 yards.

Anambra 2014: Can Anambra North make It?

The stage is almost set for the gubernatorial election in Anambra State and the political gladiators in the state are already jostling around to make themselves relevant and the people conscious of their political ambition.
Incidentally too, the lacuna created by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been filled up, as the body has come up with a programme for the election. Unless there is a change in the time table, the election will take place on November 16, this year, while the handover to the elected Governor will be on March 17, 2014, thereby ending the eight years of Mr. Peter Obi’s rule in the state.
As usual, in Anambra where everyone believes that he or she is not only qualified to contest, but even more qualified than any other person, a lot of people have declared their intention to contest, while many more are still likely to declare. Nobody will be surprised at the number of people already on the field of play, especially when one realizes that in the last gubernatorial election in the state.

PDP Aspirants

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alone had more than 40 governorship aspirants, whose posters adorned the streets of Anambra State.

Presently, more than 50 gubernatorial aspirants from different political parties and from all the three Senatorial zones in the state have emerged, and it does not appear as if the political field is yet saturated, because many more seem to be putting on their fighting gloves. This is in spite of the fact that the State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi has widely announced to all and sundry that the next Governor of Anambra State has been zoned to Anambra North Senatorial District. His argument for that decision which still appears to be an individual’s decision is that Anambra North has so far been marginalized in the scheme of things in the state, because the area has not produced any governor since the creation of Anambra State in 1991.

His contention is that fairness demands that Anambra North should be given the opportunity to produce the next governor for the state in order to correct the imbalance.

Much as those pieces of submissions appear convincing and logical, the fact is that many aspirants have emerged from both the Anambra Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts, even though it seems that there are more aspirants from Anambra North than from any of the other two Senatorial Districts.
Those aspiring from the two Senatorial zones whose Governor Peter Obi’s zoning formular does not favour have advanced their argument which tends to project the Governor as trying to bring division among the various Senatorial zones and among people who have been co-existing peacefully since the creation of the state
.

They have also argued in unism that the issue of zoning of any elective position in the state is such a serious matter that could not be dictated by any individual, but an issue which could only be discussed and resolution taken on a round – table conference of stake holders.

Many of them have declared variously at different fora, that the issue of zoning political offices has never been tabled at any meeting in the state and as such, an imposition of such an issue could not be accepted by the political leaders, no matter how palatable it may appear.

One fact has actually emerged from all enquires over zoning. That fact is that virtually every stakeholder agrees that zoning if adopted could assist in dousing the political tension that is characteristics of elections in the state, but what everyone opposes is imposing it on the people.
It also seems that the aspirants and indeed leaders of other political parties believe that if the zoning policy is adopted now as proposed by Mr. Peter Obi, it would give the Governor’s party-the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) an advantage, as the people of the North could see it as what the Governor and his APGA Government of the State did for them and therefore vote for APGA candidates massively.
The aspirants from Anambra Central and Anambra South Senatorial Districts have also argued that in past elections interested persons from the North contested with others and were not barred, so there is no genuine reason why the 2014 should now be reserved for them alone.
It is also their argument that the policy if allowed, will give Governor Obi the opportunity to select a candidate by himself which will make nonsense of democracy we all clamour that it thrives.
Although many people from Anambra North have expressed delight about Governor Obi’s view to draw the governorship race exclusive to them, the general opinion is that the Governor has inadvertently drawn the antagonism of other zones against them as some people have vowed never to yield to such a plan now.
Another serious implication of that policy is that aspirants from the area seem to have swallowed it hook, line and sinker and have come out in large number. There are more aspirants so far from Anambra North Senatorial District now than there had ever been in any past election. Some may see it as healthy, but a proper political analyses will easily convince one, that the situation may eventually yield adverse result to the zone.

The implication of Governor Obi’s policy is that unless the aspirants from Anambra North think fast and act fast, leading to some of them dropping their ambition, they may end up losing even the nomination of their parties to their counterparts from the Central and the South Senatorial Districts.

If that happens, they cannot stand for the election proper how much more winning it.

Serious contenders so far from Anambra North Senatorial Zone include:
PRINCE JOHN EMEKA:
Prince John Emeka hails from Anam in Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State. He is of a royal family, being the son of H.R.H Late Igwe Emeka. He was former Minister for Water Resources and had contested Senatorial election for Anambra North and won, but later his victory was nullified in the court. He seems to be enjoying the support of a large percentage of people from the Senatorial Zone. According to sources, he is presently believed to be contemplating defecting to the All Progressive Grand Alliance where he intends to vie for ticket to make his gubernatorial ambition a reality. Sources close to him said this decision was predicated on the conviction that the nullification of his electoral victory at the court was plotted by some powerful members of the PDP in the state who believed that if he was allowed to go to the Senate, he would use that position to consolidate his plan for the 2014 governorship election. He therefore feels that being in the same party with such people who can work against him when it matters most does not argur well for him. His other reason however, is that the state governor as the state leader of the party could at the end, convince APGA to conceed the Governorship ticket to somebody from Anambra North. Prince Emeka’s permutation is however now beclouded with uncertainty as to which way even the APGA could go, judging from the recent Appeal Court, Enugu, judgement which pronounced Chief Victor Umeh as authentic National Chairman of APGA.

HON VICTOR AFAM OGENE:
HON VICTOR AFAM OGENE is from Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. He is presently representing Ogbaru Local Government Area in the National Assembly. Ogene is one who has age and education to his adventage, and is one of the strongest proponents of Anambra North producing the next governor. Another fact to his advantage is that opinions in his area adjudge him as already doing very well, both in his contributions at the House of Representatives and in drawing democracy dividends close to communities within his area of representation. He was known to have made huge personal donations to the widows, the less privileged and the unemployed youths in his local government area. Hon. Ogene was one of the first group of people to declare his intention to contest the governorship election on the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance ( APGA).

SENATOR EMMA ANOSIKE:
Senator Emma Anosike had been in the Senate using the platform of Peoples Democratic Party to represent Anambra North Senatorial District. He is one of the strong pillars of PDP in Anambra North Senatorial zone and has remained consistent with the party, in spite of all odds.
Senator Anosike has come out strong and has announced his intention to contest the governorship still on the platform of PDP. His earlier position in the Senate and consistency in the PDP and major stakeholder in the politics of not only Anambra North, but the state in general, projects him as one of the gubernatorial aspirants to watch in the 2014 gubernatorial election of the state.
Meanwhile, his posters are already pasted all around the places while his foot Soldiers are going round, telling the people of Anambra State what the former Senator has up his sleeve.

CHIEF PAUL ODENIGBO:
Chief Paul Odenigbo was until recently, the former Secretary to Anambra State Government. His position at that level in government has exposed him to high level experience in human management and analysts said that it will be an advantage to him, because he has acquired enough knowledge about the working of government and Anambra State in particular.

MR. OSELOKA OBAZE:
Mr. Oseloka Obaze is from Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. He is presently the Secretary to Anambra State Government, a position which Chief Paul Odenigbo occupied before he came.
Observers are however of the opinion that Mr. Obaze is yet to adjust to the political style of Nigeria and Anambra State in particular, having just returned from America where he lived for a long time. There is also the notion that he is not a good mixer and not many people are comfortable with the way he wants everybody that comes around him to adjust to his American way. It is widely believed that the Anambra State Governor Obi is solidily behind him in the bid to replace him in 2014, a position which political observers said should amount to a continuation of Mr. Obi’s leadership of the state.

MR. CHINEDU IDIGO:
Chinedu Idigo hails from Aguleri and before now, had practised law in Lagos. He is from the royal Idigo family and the son of a Prominent journalist, late Chief Gab Idigo.
Mr. Idigo is a very young man whom the youths in Anambra North have indeed endorsed as their choice for the governorship come 2014.
Left to the youths, he has no problem mounting the seat of power, but he has some battle to do with older contenders who feel that he is too young and inexperienced for the position of a governor he wants to occupy.

DR. CHIKE OBIDIGBO:
Dr. Chike Obidigbo is a well known industrialist and employer of labour. He hails from Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area. Several opinions are that he is the choice of the State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, although nothing has happened publicly to confirm that opinion.
Observers said that he has all it takes to win the gubernatorial election and lead well, judging from his vast experience in human and financial management. His company has branches across the South- East and has more than 2,000 people in its employ.
It is said that Dr. Obidigbo has sufficient resources to fund his campaign unlike most of the other contenders. His gentle disposition is also said to be an advantage to him.

MR. PATRICK OBIANWU:
Mr. Patrick Obianwu is a Lagos based architect who feels that there is urgent need for him to come and rebuild Anambra State.
From all indications, he has the will and has in the last few months been making franctic effort to ensure that his dream becomes a reality.
He hails from Onitsha where he had his early life education.Mr. Obianwu is driving towards his ambition through the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). It is however understood that Onitsha people are thinking on the line of conceding the governorship to a candidate from Anambra East or West Local Governments which has larger population in order to ensure that the Anambra North Senatorial District emerges as the governor. If that happens, then Mr. Obianwu’s ambition will be jeopardized.

Dillish wins Big Brother - The Chase!

After expressing her desires to be the first woman to win the Big Brother grand prize since Zambia’s Cherise did so seven seasons ago, Dillish has done it for all of Africa’s women!
The gorgeous Namibian started her Chase race as the proverbial underdog and was labeled everything from lazy to a pampered princess. As the Chase rolled on however, Dillish quickly emerged as a very strong contender for the Chase title and won her fellow Housemates and Africa over, with her quirky, accented alter ego, aptly titled Princess Dillish.

Dilish

Dillish hugs Cleo in happy tears…

The Namibian made sure to stay away from trouble and coasted through the Chase by taking her place behind the scenes. While her fellow Housemates got themselves into hot water, fighting and gossiping their way to what they hoped was the top of the mountain, Dillish remained grounded and maintained cordial relations with her fellow Housemates.
The only time the Namibian got herself in a spot of trouble was when she and her good friend, Nigeria’s Melvin, had a disagreement after she told her fellow Housemates about a relationship he was involved in,which was less than stellar. Dillish and Cleo proved to all and sundry that women are indeed a force of nature. The two hotties pipped their male counterparts, Elikem and Melvin to the Top 2 while, as well as their close friend Beverly.
Before the big news was delivered, Pebbles the fish surprised all and sundry with one last speech. “On behalf of myself and the other fish, I would like to congratulate you on your amazing feat. You are the specialest ladies in Africa,” Pebbles said.
However, one thing is clear! Tonight is Dillish’s night and oh what a moment it was! As soon as the Namibian was announced the winner of the Chase, the Namibian broke down in a heap of tears at the realisation that she has a cool USD 300 000 sitting in her bank account. Yes Africa! She came, she saw and she conquered. In heels even!

Anambra guber: All set for APGA primaries today

All is now set for today’s governorship primary election of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State. For obvious reasons, it is one exercise critical observers and bookmakers have been waiting for. APGA under the leadership of Governor Peter Obi whose tenure ends in March next year had held sway in Anambra State since 2006. But, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the new candidate that would fly the party’s flag in the November 16 governorship race would emerge in the next 24 hours.
And predictably, like in every power struggle, a lot of political undercurrents would play out as the party settles for a candidate of choice. Beyond other variables, the two major players whose interests would determine who emerges at the end of the game are Governor Peter Obi and the APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh. As the political battle incubates in the womb of time, many are patiently waiting to see how the interests of Obi and Umeh would either clash or coalesce in the journey toward the November 16 governorship poll.
Already, as major APGA stakeholders go for broke in today’s exercise, there are fears that the peace deal between Governor Obi and Umeh before the primaries may be heading for the rocks over the choice of candidate. For instance, it was gathered that Governor Obi may have literally ‘blessed’ a retired banker and former Executive Director of Fidelity Bank, Chief Willy Obiano to fly the party’s flag in the governorship race.

Peter Obi & Umeh

Obiano is from Anambra North, a zone which Obi is supporting to produce his successor.

There are permutations that Umeh is not comfortable with the choice of the retired banker who was said to have been drafted into the race just two weeks ago. The thinking in Umeh’s camp is that Obiano is not the kind of brand that can make APGA have a smooth ride in the coming election.
But Governor Obi’s supporters think otherwise and insist that Anambra state, indeed, does not need a conventional politician at this point in its history.
The calculation in the camp is that only a technocrat like Obi is needed to consolidate and sustain the culture of prudence established by the outgoing APGA governor.
It was also gathered that except a last minute change of heart by the two major actors in the ensuing power struggle over the choice of APGA candidate, another political battle is imminent between Obi and Umeh again immediately after the primaries.
The signs of the current fears among APGA members emerged shortly after the Appeal Court ruling reinstated Umeh and ruled that there should be a return to status quo. What the ruling meant was that all those elected with Umeh should return to their positions. Majority of the party officials had pitched tents with Umeh during the crisis and they returned with the determination to take their pound of flesh from Governor Obi.
It was also learnt that Umeh’s supporters saw their first chance when they drew up the guidelines for the council polls. It was gathered that they ensured that nobody from the transition committee at the councils was eligible to contest the October council election. This was a ploy to oust Obi’s supporters who had held sway and looked forward to the council elections as a chance to continue their tenure.
Having seen his supporters lose grip of the party ahead of the council election, Obi is said to be worried trying to ensure that his commissioners are selected as delegates for the governorship primaries.

Recall that out of the 13 APGA aspirants that initially declared interest in the race, only seven eventually scaled through with the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN), Prof Chukwuma Soludo becoming the major casualty of the party’s screening exercise.

The successful candidates include Hon Chukwuemeka Nwogbo, Paul Odenigbo, Hon Uche Ekwunife, Chief Willie Obiano, Mr John Nwosu, John Okechukwu Emeka and Nwachi Patrick Obianwu.

Those screened out were Chukwuemeka Soludo, Emmanuel Nweke, Ogbuefi Tony Nnacheta, Chinedu Idigo,Dr Chike Obidigbo and Mr Oseloka Obaze.

Barely 48 hours after the Anambra State governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Awka, confusion continues to trail the exercise which produced two candidates.
While the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Senator Andy Uba emerged the winner of the primary election conducted by the Ejike Oguebego-led faction, Tony Nwoye became the candidate of the parallel congress held by Prince Ken Emeakayi’s faction.
The PDP National Working Committee had given recognition to the Ken Emeakayi faction while INEC had insisted that only the Ejike Oguebego-led executive is known to the commission.
It was learnt that aggrieved by alleged injustice done to him by the party, one of the major stakeholders, Chief Chris Uba got INEC through his brother, Andy who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC and gubernatorial aspirant, to recognize the chairman of his faction, Chief Ejike Oguebego instead of Emeakayi.
It was also learnt that INEC obliged him by putting out a statement to that effect adding that it would only monitor the congress being conducted by Oguebego and that any other one was considered illegal by the commission.
As the development was unfolding, all the 13 cleared aspirants except Senator Uba were working with Emeakayi and the NWC until Saturday when about four of them joined Uba at his own primary election held at Emmaus House, Awka.
While it was obvious that Senator Uba would carry the day at the Emmaus House primaries, the result of the one held at Ekwueme Square surprised many as the former state chairman of the party, Comrade Tony Nwoye emerged winner and beating Hon. Nicholas Ukachukwu who was tipped to win the ticket with a good margin. The emergence of Nwoye has been attributed to his antecedents in politics dating back to his time as the National President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
Though it was rumoured that he was being sponsored by an oil magnet, Prince Arthur Eze.
It was also gathered that his main sponsors are the party people as majority of them contributed money to ensure that he won.
For Senator Uba, though money was not his problem, he was said to have been drawing strength from President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience who allegedly supported his candidature as a way to appreciate his role in making Jonathan emerge as Vice President to late Yar’Adua.
It was further alleged that between Tuesday and Thursday last week, some of the aspirants were taken to the Aso Rock Villa where they were appealed to by the First Lady to step down for Uba and support him, hence the cross over by some of them on Saturday.
Nwoye, Anenih, Obiogbolu and Walter Okeke were not at the Emmaus House primaries, while Ugochukwu Okeke participated in both exercises.
Reacting to the outcome of the primaries, former Health Minister, Professor ABC Nwosu described it as worrisome and a recipe for disaster.
That’s a recipe for disaster in an election.
PDP would again end up with litigations.
The party should explore its internal mechanism to settle it,” he said.
He said he declined from attending any of the congresses held at the weekend because of the confusion.
Also in his reaction, Chief Chyna Iwuanyanwu declared that the outcome was expected because of the factionalisation.
Prince Ken Emeakayi said that PDP remains a party and could not have held two governorship primaries in the state.
One of the aspirants that contested in the Primary election, Senator Emma Anosike said, “Having two candidates emerging for PDP is not a problem, it has been happening; if you follow the trend of PDP or other political parties, it happens like that but by the time they finish, the stakeholders of the party at top will now take their decision.
For one of the contestants, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, he summarized it thus: “I am not aware that there was any parallel primary, you know we’ve been here since morning and the announcement that was made and the instructions from the National was that there should be state congress held at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square.”
